Some Chinese Cuisines

Some Chinese Cuisines I had during my visit to China.
This is one of the dessert. The butter cream coated yam paste. The culinary art is awesome but the taste is so so...

What is this? It was served with porridge in hotel at Hangzhou. I was so curious, I thought it was a kind of edible escargot. I tried tapping with my spoon but it was soft. I got one and tried. Ceh, a kind of preserved veg called 'luo si cai'.

These are what we had for breakfast at most of the hotel in China.

A very famous cuisine in China ~ Salted water duck( 盐 水 鸭). Do you notice that the skin is still fledged? Yuk! Yuk!

I prefer roasted duck rather than salted water duck.

Hahaha, an erected "du ka"!

This fish from Xihu really tastes odd, it has the earthlike savour.

Sweet sour fish ~ more to Malaysian favour.

"Dong po rou" ~ succulent pork prepared in the clay pot is the favourite of our group.

Curry pork? Have you ever tried before? A lot leftover!

A pair of Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crabs ( 阳 澄 湖 大 闸 蟹)which cost rmb120. The tag marks the genuine crabs from Yangcheng Lake.
The hairy crabs in Yangcheng Lake near Shanghai are
one of the most coveted Autumn delicacies for the Chinese. Since it was the beginning of winter, we were able to hunt for this delicacy. The hairy crabs are famous for the tender meat and tasty yolk (ovary and digestive glands). I devoured this pair. Wow, yummy! yummy!

Cool place...Wuzhen

Time flies... It has been half a month since I came back from China.

I took a 9D 8N tour to China~Hangzhou, Wuzhen, Suzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi and Shanghai. Stories about the Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong"s visits to Jiangnan area disguised as a commoner are welly known. The places where Emperor Qianglong had sojourned are raised with graceful, refined weeping willow trees near the river bank.

The most impressive of all is the Wuzhen Village. Mandarin translation of the place "Wuzhen" is "Blackened Town". The houses are unique. The wood of the house is fumigated to avoid termites' feedstuff. All the houses are built with blackened wood. The stilts are standing on cement blocks so as the dampness of the earth would not wear away the wood. I noticed that all the wooden stilts are still in fine condition.

I have taken some photos at Wuzhen, so enjoy viewing.

The entrance of Wuzhen .

The street of Wuzhen ~ I am naughty, I peeped through the cranny hole and saw refrigerator, television, lazy chair... huh, a new modern furnished room!

Does this village look cool?

A cobbler found in the village.

Does this look like Kampung Air?

The water is still and the whole village is in stillness. I experienced a peace of mind here.

The weeping willow trees along the bank.

The incompetent man

After working for almost a year, I came across an incompetent man yesterday. A short dark sturdy man came to my office who had an unpaid open tiket in our hand. He wanted to confirm a flight seat which is operated by Maswings from Mukah to Kuching on the 6th of December.

I came to know that the flight is fully booked on that day and seat is only available on the 7th of December. He kept on telling me that he MUST be at Kuching on the 6th to attend a seminar which was already planned by him. I had the mood to joke with him that if the aircraft is solely owned by me, I would brought him to Kuching on his quest.

I was all the while alone, he backbit his nephew in law, a converted muslim lady and commented my Iban fellow worker. I felt I had the paroxysm of throttling him. I managed to mollify my anger and pitched my voice low.

After about an hour of dealing such a stupid idiot, one of my honourable guest popped into my office. I thought that would come to end. What did that idiot do? He raised hell and protested my service. He claimed for the serious loss of his time. What a hell he was talking? Eventually he left my office with a chesty smile on his * celaka* face.

Weird, weird, that stupid idiot returned to my office before I left. He asked me about how I felt. I was so frustrated and gave voice to my feeling but probably I gave him a sarcastic grin. I told him that he who had shown his own disesteem to a certain extend that my customer disgraced him for what he had done. I questioned him, "Are you conscious of your discourtesy in public?''

He shoke his head and walked away in silence. I think his muteness was a consequence of his gaucheness. This soul really exhausted me!

Now I ....

My mum has reached Mukah safe and sound on All Saints Day. She brought 50 chai kuih for me. How nice, lovely and caring my mum is! I ran through 3 pieces at a time. I really indulged in those chai kuih. Hehe, that's why my BMI is a little bit higher. Since I thought it is overweening greed to keep so many for my own, I decided to give out some to my church pals.

.
The appealing chai kuih brought by my mum

My mum is still very energetic, she is busy laundering, cooking, scavenging my house though she is in her seventies. In earlier post I have mentioned that she is disciplinary, she always goes for a brisk walk in the morning. She is still doing that now over here, only that she has changed her schedule to suit my time.

Though I know pretty well that I need to pick up some exercise to keep myself heathy, I have never done that consistently because I am lazybones.

My mum has come, she goes for briskly walk everyday if the weather allows her to do so. I think I need to follow my mum's trend to keep myself sound. I have no reason not to be her companion. Yes, furthermore I can keep myself fit too.

She is going back to Kuching on 16 November. It has 10 days for me to accompany her in her evening walk. I hope she enjoys staying with me. Just wana share a photo of my mum and my family with you.

My mum, sharing the joy on AD's convocation day.

I am going to Shanghai on the 18Nov and only be back on 26 Nov. Here, I received an invitation card from Jude.

To Jude Wong PC, Auntie is really really sorry that I can't attend your wedding matrimony and the dinner reception at Phoenix Court Restaurant, Paramount Hotel. May our good Lord binds two of you in one with His Love. Enjoy the bliss of your marriage life for ever and ever!

When knowing that Suituapui is invited, I wana meet him on this special occassion. Sigh, I just can't make it la..

Shout Out Joy

"Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture" (Ps. 100.3).

In worship we acknowledge who God is and what our relationship to him is. The Lord is God - sovereign, supreme, majestic... The surrounding nations of the time worshipped their idols. Our culture worships a variety of ideologies and material achievements. But in worship we acknowledge that in the final count only the Lord is God.

The Lord is our Creator. We belong to him as part of his creation. But we also belong to him in a particular sense because of redemption and grace. We know his loving protection, care and nourishment.

I have been worrying about my girl's tutorial fees, lodging expenses, airticket fares to and fro.
Now God provides her needs. I wana shout out joy to my Almighty God.

My Jesus my saviour
Lord there is none like You
All of my days I want to praise
The wander of Your mighty love

My comfort my shelter
Tower the refuge and strength
Let every breath all that I am
Never cease to worship You

Shout to the Lord all the earth let us sing
Power and majesty praise to the king
Mountains bow down and the sea
Will roar at the sound of Your name
I sing for joy at the work of Your hands
For ever I love You forever I stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You

My mama is here soon

My mama, a typical Foochow lady who was born in the zodiacal year of the pig. When she got hold of the high level of LDL in her blood test and the high risk of getting coronary artery disease, she is constantly alert and vigilant of her daily diet. She has been taking medicine to lower her LDL for numbers of years.

She is stern and disciplinary. She wakes up before dawn. She recites the rosary before she goes for a brisk walk in the park nearby the house at Tabuan Jaya, Kuching. She prepares the food with low fat, low salt, low sugar, no monosodium glutamate ( I called it as Chinese cuisine addict). Hehe, I am not a monosodium glutamate freak. Though she leads a healthy life and consumes healthy food, with the aid of medication, her LDL level never falls to normal range. What a ridiculous!! Do we say that it is so what called 'hereditary cholesterol disorder'? She has 4 out of 6 children are having the same problem.

Though she is in her seventies, dementia or memory loss is absolutely not an element of her age. Her good memory is incontrovertible!

It has been months since her last visit to Mukah. We would be able to chit chat till midnight. I miss the chat so much. We can even hang on the telephone for hour. I requested her to come to Mukah on All Saints Day and spare two weeks with me and she responded spontaneously.

How much I look forward to seeing her in Mukah soon.

What Does Your Birth Date Mean?

After reading DSvT , I saw this ' what does your birth date mean?' I would like to have a try. Here it goes....

Your Birthdate: June 5
You have many talents, and you are great at sharing those talents with others.
Most people would be jealous of your clever intellect, but you're just too likeable to elicit jealousy.
Progressive and original, you're usually thinking up cutting edge ideas.
Quick witted and fast thinking, you have difficulty finding new challenges.

Your strength: Your superhuman brainpower

Your weakness: Your susceptibility to boredom

Your power color: Tangerine

Your power symbol: Ace

Your power month: May

Hahaha, Superhuman brainpower I have and is always susceptible to boredom. O..o.. I see why some are jealous of me. Haiya, Why should we be envious of others success? Jealousy may bring frenzied frustration, imbalance..... .

Old-school Tag

I was tagged by Daniel a week ago. Now this is what I have in my old hard disk.
I was sent to school at the age of 4+ while my pals were still suckling and pampered by parents.

1) 5 bad habits when you were in your school days
* Seldom finish my primary school homework. I think I was exempted from homework for I was nonaged.
* Hide and Seek during recess. We slipped into the pepper garden which was owned by a popo nearby our school. Hundreds of pepper berry scattered on the ground after our visit.
* Chaffing round the class with rubber bands and paper pellets.
* Drowse off in the afternoon session
* Tug of war. I jabbed a ruler into a crack of the wooden wall and had a tug of war with a student next door.

2) 3 of my favorite subjects..why?
* None of them are interesting.

3) 3 subjects that you dislike..why?
* Almost all subjects for no reason.

4) Interesting About Me
* Selected by music teacher to represent the class for inter-class singing competition. I shed my tears in front of the class and yet was put on stage. (Sob! Sob! a nonaged little girl in Transition class).
* Offered myself for English Speech Competition. I worked hard and was awarded. (Form 2)
* A participant of school swimming team for 4 years.
* A school basketball player for 3 years.
* I passed my Senior Cambridge with a Division II at the age of 16. I doubt how could I pass my exam.

5) I used to love..
* playing basketball
* swimming
* dancing
* hanging around the school

6) I couldn' live without ...
* my elder brother. I was only 10+ years old when I left my parents and continued my secondary school education with my elder brother. We were in the same class. My dad rented two small rooms in town for us so we needed to do the cooking and washing by ourselves. My brother is always the one who takes good care of me.

7) Who did you call before you sleep at night?
* We had no telephone at that time.

Nonok

Hahaha, when I came across 'nonok' at Suituapui blog commented by kpenyu, I linked this word to Melanau dialect. What does it mean?
I remembered when I first came to Mukah, this most probably was my first Melanau word I learnt. My late hubby was a 'Cilanau' which means 'Cina Melanau'.
I stayed with my Melanau mother-in-law who spoke Hokkien most of the time. She seldom conversed in Melanau though she was a
typical Melanau. I was told that My father-in-law, a China-orientated man had great authoritative manner of speaking Hokkien at home.
One of my naughty niece said, "Aunty, aunty, if you want to learn Melanau, I'll teach you."
"Well, then teach me simple and easy word." I responded with gratitude.
"Nonok" she said and asked me to repeat after her.
"Nonok" I repeated.
Wah, she gave me a big, big grin and praised me for my strong Melanau accent. I was on a high exhilarating elation for days.
I was a stupid idiot and I kept on repeating the word and other newly learnt words like: telo, melo, ako, bei, tabei, bla bla bla....all sounded like telur, telur, telur.....
After couples of day learning Melanau, I was excited and I wanted to show my genius for vernacular learning.
Then, I told my late husband what I have learnt.
"ako-I, melo-we, telo-you, bla bla bla, only one word and the first word I learnt 'nonok', I don't know what does it mean."
"Hahaha! I will teach you some more,
"tugei, dinei, ........" my late hubby cried out.
There, there, there, you see, I learnt those "interesting and funny" words first from my late hubby before I proceeded to formal Melanau.
I was too embarrassed by my ignorant of 'nonok' at that time.
Ladies and gentlemen, do you know what does it mean now? ROTFL!!

The spectre

June 2006 was a creepy month for me.
My kids were not around. The eldest son was pursuing his master in UTM, my second son was having his industrial training in Kuching, whereas my youngest daughter was having matriculation class in Labuan Matriculation College.
I resided alone and now is still alone in my own old wooden house.
Some of my friends exclaimed, "Come on, Anita, are you not scared staying alone?
I was once affrighted by my own hallucination or my illusive imagination or may be it really was fantasm. This created a sense of ghosts existing in my house. Was my house haunted after being vacant for two weeks?
It was a chilling experiment I ever had when I came back home after two weeks away to visit my brother in Singapore and my eldest son in Johor.
The first week, I sensed a black figure ghosted across my room and stood by my bed with a suspicious smile looking at me for two consecutive nights . Huh, I was pondering what was that. I kept my bed room light on ever then at night. The phenomena vanished.
The second week, I smelled awful fishy decay remains in one of my room, and pungent smell in the other twos when I came back from work. I sprayed the room with air refresher. The smell diminished. I started cleaning and clearing away all the unused stuffs.
I had a creepy-crawly feeling when I entered my bed room.
SOB SOB, I was suffering from insomnia for couples of weeks.
I was bewildered. Was it ghost or just my psychological disturbances for being staying alone?
I thought I needed a psychiatrist. I prayed and asked for God's wisdom and discernment.
Finally, I made a decision to say a requiem mass for my late husband, and a house blessing session. I told my parish priest, Reverend Father Michael Lee about what I had encountered past few weeks. Reverend Father Michael Lee agreed to celebrate a mass at my house.
A number of more or less 35 brothers and sisters came and attended the mass. After the requiem mass and house blessing, we had a session of fellowship. The door was opened and banged shut. Oh, it might be because of the wind! Every body looked at me weirdly.
Reverend Father Michael told a joke, "Anita, let the phantom one take good care of your house."
"No," I said, "Lord Jesus will take charge of my house. The one had been here for couple of weeks already. It needs to leave my house."
Until then, I could able to take a chill pill. My insomnia was healed.
Now I am fiercely proud of my own independent individualism.
Praise the Lord!

Bali D 3

It was the third day in Bali. We were told to begin our journey to Bedugul at 11:00am. As we did not want to waste our time doing nothing in the hotel, we initiated to go to the Kuta Sea Beach and have some fun. Our tour guide agreed and brought us there.
We went to the Turtle Island on a glass boat. It was a boat with two glass panes on the bottom from where we could see shoals of fish under the boat. We saw big turtles which were kept in the pond on Turtle Island.
I would like to experience the parasailing, unfortunately it was quite windy and I could not make it.
We tried on the banana boat and jet ski. Waha...my first try with these at my old age.

We had our buffet lunch in one of the restaurant at Bedugul. We traced a pigsty among terraces of vegetables. After lunch, we proceeded towards Beratan Lake Temple which has a great scenery.

breath-taking view with my lousy camera.

Bali D 2

After we had our breakfast at the hotel, we went to witness the Bali traditional Barong and Kris Dance.

Barong, a mythological animal represents a good spirit. It has a dragon head and a tiger tail.

Rangda, a mythological monster represents an evil spirit.

Even with the pamphlet which was distributed in three languages, I still could not understand the fighting between Barong and Rangda. It was a fable to me. Here are some of the photos taken, so keep viewing.

This is Barong side view.

Is Barong face like a dragon?

The group playing with traditional musical instrument.

This is Rangda, the monster. Look at the two nenens. wakaka!!

The dancers, servants of Rangda.

We visited a Batik boutique, I bought a sarong which costs IDR150,000 for souvenir. My sis, Rita bought a dress which costs IDR275,ooo.
After lunch, It took almost 2 hours to reach Kintamani. We visited the Tampakspring temple. Inside the temple, there is a spring where natural ground water flows out of it.
I was told that about 75% of the Balinese believe in Hinduism. They celebrate Hari Raya Galungan twice a year.
We were able to see the Balinese doing offerings to their Gods. All the statues were wrapped up with new clothes mainly black and white, some are yellow.
We were asked to tie a yellow ribbon on our waist before we entered the temple. It is an obligation to all the visitors.

The Gapura - The good and the bad. This can be seen everywhere on the way to Kintamini, Bali.

The Tampakspring. (A natural flow of ground water)

These are the offerings they made: rice, kuih, flowers, pandan leaves and IDR.

Bali D 1

It took us about 2 hours to fly from Kuching to Bali by Airasia flight. We reached Ngurah Rai Airport, Denpasar Bali at 7:30pm. Our tour guide Mr. Micro and our driver Mr. Dewa were waiting for us in the airport. The name of the airport commemorates a hero fighting for Indonesia Independence in 1945 from the colony of the Dutch.
It was a 45 minutes-drive to the sea beach at Jimbaran. We were served with seafood dinner.

Seafood with yummy BBQ sauce.

Cocktail as our appetizer.

A basket of Balinese rice for 6 of us.

This is the vegetable soup.
6 of us stuffed all the seafood. We joined in with the Indonesian Group from Jakarta for a beach jogget. Huahuahua! Jogget, jogget di Bali.
It was 10.30pm when we reached Goodway Hotel at Nusa Dua.

Bali, I am coming soon

Uh-huh! I am going to travel again. This time to our nearby country~Bali, Indonesia.
We had booked our Airasia ticket from Kuching to Bali on 23rd May. Our departing date is on 23rd August and returning on 26th August, a 4 days 3 nights stay in Bali.
Later we came to know that Airasia is terminating the incoming flight from Bali to Kuching starting on 24th August. Oh, my goodness! We will not be able to make up the trip at our schedule. We have made our Bali ground tour already. What shall we do?
We called Airasia Centre and was given 4 options:
a) Refund the airfare
b) Return via KL to Kuching and need to pay the fare difference.
c) Return via Jakarta to Kuching and need to pay the fare difference
d) Reschedule the travel time.
Refunding the airfare is definitely not in our mind. Now, its the matter of air fare compensation . We have to pay the fare difference of RM 300++ via KL and RM200++ via Jakarta. We ended up with Solution c, reschedule the travel time to 16th August without addition of any airfare. Our Bali ground tour is rearranged. Unfortunately our previously booked hotel, Mercure Kuta hotel rooms are unavailable at the new stated time.
I come to know Indonesia Independence Day falls on 17 August, thats why most of the hotels are fully booked.
We had no choice. We made a new hotel booking~Goodway Hotel. It is at Nusa Dua which is to the South-east of Bali Ngurah Rai Airport.
After searching through internet, I was and is quite disappointed. The hotel is not at the seaside. If we want to have a dip in the sea, we need to get a ride. We were told that we can easily catch a taxi to the beach.
Though I live in Mukah, a fishing village by the sea, I never like to dip my whole self into the water because the water is not clear.
Since 17th August is Indonesia Independence Day, I hope we can see Balinese style of celebrating their independence day.
With the help of the map, I shall not be lost, that is for sure.

Back again

I took a break to visit my mom who celebrated her 73rd birthday.
Sad to see, my three brothers were not around. My sister Patricia came all the way back from Brunei.
My mom was very happy to see two of us. She did not complain her sons for not being able to be with her. She is always grateful for little, little things.
She is so understanding.
She recites her rosary every morning.
Mom, may our good Lord bless you with good health and long life.
Since I was in Kuching, I flew over the South China Sea to meet my son and only daughter in UTM, Skudai.
Reached Senai airport at around 8.00pm. My son, AD was already there waiting.
I had a chance to meet Fr. Paul and two youths, Simon and Daniel Liew~a blogger with his site at http://danielliew.com/
After a week break, back to my work again. It took me a week to clear my table.
Today is Saturday, my boss is not in, so i have a little time to come and scrawl here again.
I have FOUR questions in my mind:
1. Is boss always bragging?
2. Is boss always in the right?
3. Is boss always tyrannic, having autocratic behaviour?
4. Is boss always as chesty as a peacock, boasting about his fanlike tail?
Aiyo, hope I can manage well with my emotion because I am inexperienced in this tourism industry.

2 Chinese superstitions

I was just back from a funeral mass. The funeral mass for Melanau here was celebrated at 1.00pm in the afternoon.
I think we Chinese traditionally don't allow burial to be done in the afternoon. The earlier the better.
I have heard from the oldies that it is not advisable to bury the corpse in the afternoon especially when the sun is shinning brightly. Our shadows may fall on the coffin and our souls will be taken away by the deceased one. Then you'll face great trouble in near future, having obstacles in life, job or health.
The second superstitious thing : the deceased one who passed away in the hospital should not be brought back to his/her own house. The deceased must sent right from hospital to the burial site which his/her family's member had chosen with good "feng shui".
When my late hubby went to our Lord six years back in Kuching General Hospital, we traveled all the way from Kuching back to Mukah. I decided and insisted to bring the coffin back home. Everybody said "tik ki" and gossiped at my back.
Wake prayer was recited for 7 consecutive nights followed by a requiem mass with blessing of house.
"The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want"
I clung to God. The only prayer was " Lord, I have no say for taking away my hubby because life is given by You, but bless my sons and daughters."
In God's hand nothing is impossible.
I experience abundant blessings from God.
Thanks God and Praise the Lord

Peter n Paul

Peter the apostle and Paul the teacher have brought us to know the law of the Lord.

The feast of Sts Peter and Paul falls on 29 of June. Sts Peter and Paul are our church patron saints nevertheless you know the name of Mukah Parish Church.

Our feast day Eucharistic Celebration was celebrated in bilingual, Melanau and Bahasa malaysia as majority of the congregation is Melanau. The installation of Parish Councilors and Church Wardens were done in the church during the Eucharistic Celebration. All the parish councilors are in coat whereas the wardens are all in black Melanau costume.

o...yes, when I first came to Mukah , I was told that a few Melanaus pursued black magic by my late husband who was a Chinese Melanau. Black magic, black costume, are they related? I like black wear so that I may not look plump. :D

Receiving Letter of Appointment
